HANDHOLD (HANDHeld OLfactory Detector) is funded under the Security Theme of the European Commission's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7).

The project consists of nine partners co-ordinated by Queen's University of Belfast, working towards a leading edge portable CBRNE detectionsolution for deployment by European customs agencies, border guards, first responders, police, civil security or others operating in potentially hostile environments. HANDHOLD delivers for the first time electronics and photonics to the operating level of the molecule, bacteria and viruses with the intent to detect and win for civil security.
